U.S.S. JIMMY CARTER (SSN-23)
The Feb. 19, 2005, commissioning ceremony of U.S.S. Jimmy Carter (SSN-23) was an event that vividly stands out as both an exciting challenge, an honor, and a historic event for the Atlanta Metropolitan Council. It was a year-long project of fundraising and planning, with eight or so members (including spouses) making the trip to the naval base in Groton, Connecticut, for the event. Capt. Harley Jones, then president of the Council, presided at the reception. Former President Jimmy Carter, and former first lady Rosalynn Carter, the boat’s sponsor, spoke at the commissioning of the Navy’s newest attack submarine.
The submarine was the third and final in the Seawolf class and was specially equipped for stealth and intelligence work. The submarine is the first named after a living former president. President Carter was a submariner during his time in the United States Navy. Today, the U.S.S. Jimmy Carter’s homeport is the Bangor Annex of Naval Base Kitsap, Washington.
