Bravo Zulu to Kennesaw Mountain High School for taking first place in the Sixth Annual Navy JROTC National Orienteering Championship Invitational!
his year’s event was held at February 14-15, 2015 at Vasquez Rocks Regional Park, Agua Dulce, CA and hosted by TROY High School NJROTC, Fullerton, California.
For those not familiar with this sport, orienteering is a competitive international sport that combines racing with navigation. It began as part of the military training in Sweden in the late 19th century. Today, anyone can enjoy this sport. In a timed race, individuals and teams use a specially created topographical map of the region a race will be run, selecting routes and navigating through diverse and often unfamiliar terrain visiting control points in sequence. Courses offer various difficulty levels – from beginner to expert – at most events.
The journey to CA began several weeks before when 600 Navy JROTC units nationally, and organized regionally, competed. Each region sent their top 2-3 orienteering teams to the “Nationals”. What is outstanding is that, of the 24 teams competing in this two-day event in CA, all four Georgia schoolscomprising 5 teams placed in the top 10! These were: Kennesaw Mountain (1st), Henry County-Gold team (2nd), Union Grove (4th), Allatoona (7th) and Henry Count-Silver (8th). Congratulations to all the participating cadets and instructors.
