DOBBINS AIR RESERVE BASE, Ga. – A Sailor at Navy Operational Support Center Atlanta was selected in May for a fellowship that will provide him with financial support, mentoring and professional development in preparation for a career in the State Department’s foreign service.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Mario Lamar, a legalman, will complete internships at State Department headquarters in Washington and at a U.S. embassy overseas as a Thomas R. Pickering fellow.

Lamar, of Mayfield, Illinois, earned a bachelor’s degree from the International Studies Program at Morehouse College in Atlanta and plans to attend graduate school at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, California.

He was selected from among hundreds of applicants from 160 schools for the fellowship.

“My experience as a Sailor gave me the discipline I needed to commit to my studies and research,” Lamar said. “There is no cookie cutter formula for success – just study, work hard and be persistent.”

Lamar also was accepted recently into Phi Beta Kappa, an honors society founded in 1776.

Phi Beta Kappa, known as America’s oldest academic honors society, represents undergraduates from 286 schools across the nation.
